GREEN SCHOOLS VISIT TO THE LOUGH

The boys from the Green Schools Committee, along with  some extra helpers went to the Lough to help clear some litter and sweep the playground area. The City Council supplied us with litter pickers, rubber gloves, sweeping brushes, and black plastic bags. We also had some doggy bags for people walking their dogs to clean up after them.
Dog fouling is a big problem there, and it is very dangerous to the wildlife in the Lough. We saw ducks, swans and pigeons there, all the boys did great work.
We then filled in a questionnaire based on what we had seen and done on our visit to the Lough
The questions that were in the questionnaire were as follows:

1. Is it a salt or freshwater amenity?

2. What area was targeted for clean up?

3. What time of the day was the area cleaned up?

4. Was the area busy, YES/NO?

5. What items were used to clean the area up?

6. Who provided the items used in the clean up?

7. What type of litter was the most common?

8. How was the litter disposed of?

9. Was there an issue with dog fouling in the area?

10. What action was taken to address the issue of dog fouling?

Have a look at all the boys working  hard!

We had lots of fun too! All the children participated in and enjoyed the activities which took place throughout the week.

Some of these activities were:
  • Energy workshops

Meet our Green Energy Team

We are currently working towards achieving our second Green Flag.  We are working really hard to reduce our energy consumption. Here are  some tips to reduce your energy consumption at home.

 Energy  Saving Tips

Turn Off the Lights!

·         Don't leave lights on when no-one is in the room.

·         Use energy efficient light bulbs. These bulbs use ¼ of electricity as normal light bulbs and last up to 12 times longer!

Turn Off Appliances!

  • Don't leave appliances on standby - turn them off. Appliances on standby are still using electrical energy. Turn off your TV, stereo, playstation, computer, washing machine, DVD and other appliances when they are not in use.

Turn Down the Heat!

Turning the thermostat down by 1°C can reduce your heating bills by 10%.·

Stop heat from escaping by closing windows and doors when the heating is on.

Turn Off the Taps!

A huge amount of electricity is used daily in supplying water and cleaning it after use, so don’t forget to turn off your taps

Take a shower instead of a bath.

Don’t over fill your kettle.
